Humberto Jimenez, PharmD, is Clinical Assistant Professor, Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy, Rutgers University , Piscataway, NJ and Infectious Disease Clinical Pharmacist at St. Michael’s Medical Center in Newark.
Target Audience
This activity is designed for physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals in New Jersey who are involved in the care of adolescents and adults who may be infected with HIV/AIDS.
STATEMENT OF NEED
People with HIV/AIDS are living longer with more effective antiretroviral medications (ARVs), but have also developed co-morbidities and resistance to ARVs with continued use and interactions with treatments for co-morbidities. As new medications are approved and research results published, HIV management is in a continued state of flux and HIV care providers are often too burdened with patient case loads to be able to individually remain as up to date on the most current standards of care as they need to be in order to provide excellence in HIV care.
The goal of this web-based activity is to provide current HIV treatment information in an accessible format, to reach health care professionals who did not attend the 2007 NJDHSS-UMDNJ statewide HIV conference with three of the most critical topics addressed at that event. This activity is designed to update physicians, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists and other HIV health care providers on the most recent developments in the care and management of HIV disease and co-morbidities; specific clinical concerns in the effective treatment of women with HIV/AIDS, and interactions between HIV medications, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, and recreational drugs.
METHOD OF INSTRUCTION
Participants should read the learning objectives and review the activity in its entirety. After reviewing the material, complete the self-assessment test consisting of a series of multiple-choice and True/ False questions.
Upon completing this activity as designed and achieving a passing score of 70% or more on the self-assessment test, participants will receive a credit letter and the test answer key four (4) weeks after receipt of the self-assessment test, registration, and evaluation materials. Estimated time to complete this activity as designed is 1.25 hours.
