CME TOOLKIT

What is CME?
Continuing medical education, as defined by the AMA and ACCME as “educational activities which serve to maintain, develop, or increase the knowledge, skills, professional performance and relationships that a physician uses to provide services for patients, the public or the profession.  The content of CME is the body of knowledge and skills generally recognized and accepted by the profession as within the basic medical sciences, the discipline of clinical medicine, and the provision of health care to the public.”

What types of activities are considered continuing medical education?
A variety of education formats may be used such as live activities (conferences, regularly scheduled conferences, video conferences) or as enduring materials (internet, monographs, CD-Roms, video/audio tapes).

I have an idea for a CME activity.  What do I do?
The UMDNJ-Center for Continuing Education is responsible for the development and implementation of CME activities that are approved for AMA Category 1 credit.  The staff in CCOE is knowledgeable about the required educational, financial and logistic process required for the development of CME activities.  They have extensive experience in coordinating CME activities nationally and internationally.

If you have an idea for a CME activity, please contact Jessica Young, Program Manager, at 973-972-6482 or youngjo@umdnj.edu to schedule an initial planning meeting.   The initial meeting will serve as a starting point for idea development and planning including:

  • Identification of the potential target audience
  • Needs Assessment documentation
  • Ideas for developing educational activities to meet the needs of the target audience
  • List of potential topics and faculty
  • Potential financial resources to support the activity
