OVERVIEW
In the post-9/11 world, healthcare professionals have the added responsibility of knowing effective ways to respond to all manners of natural and man-made disasters. This course will explore the history of bioterrorism and bioterror Agents; discuss healthcare professionals’ potential roles in bioresponse, and broader all-hazards events; review principles of Mass Casualty Response and triage of mass casualty victims; and explore organizations where those interested in response activities may participate. The material presented will be a review for those already familiar with all-hazards response activities, and a primer for those with developing interests in the field of response.

CAPT LEE SHACKELFORD graduated from the University of Nebraska, College of Dentistry in 1982. After five years of private practice in rural Missouri, and another five years serving as a dentist in two facilities in the California Department of Corrections, he joined the US Public Health Service in 1992.
During the clinical portion of his PHS career Dr. Shackelford developed an interest in emergency response roles for dentists. He has served as a casualty triage officer in Bureau of Prisons facilities, in IHS he served as the Hospital Smallpox Response Team leader, and was liaison to the county emergency response team. Dr. Shackelford is a responder within the USPHS Office of Force Readiness and Deployment, and has taught triage to dental and medical professionals in a variety of local in-service, and state and national lecture settings. He has played team leader and administrative roles during national security and response events including the 2005 Presidential Inauguration, and Hurricane Katrina response.
CAPT Shackelford served as the Director of the Division of Commissioned Corps Training and Career Development (DCCTCD), Office of Commissioned Corps Operations (OCCO), Office of the Surgeon General, in Rockville, Maryland from July, 2004 through February 2007. Currently, CAPT Shackelford is the Executive Assistant to the Assistant Secretary for Health (ASH) where his main role is to advise on policy and program development to have a positive effect on the health of the Nation.

The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Dental School is an approved course sponsor by the New Jersey State Board of Dentistry. Our courses, which deal with the scientific or clinical practice of dentistry, professional responsibilities, or ethical obligations of the profession, fulfill Board requirements for dentists’ license renewal. Credit hours are granted on an hour-for-hour basis, provided the course is completed as designed.
UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School is an ADA Continuing Education Recognition Program (ADA CERP) recognized provider; the term of acceptance extends to 12/09. UMDNJ is also an Academy of General Dentistry (AGD PACE) approved national sponsor for FAGD/MAGD credit; the term of acceptance extends to 12/10. Additionally, all courses meet the criteria for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) that are granted on an hour-for-hour basis, provided the course is completed as designed.
7.0 Social Work CE Hours
All workshops offered by the Continuing Education and Professional Development Program of the Institite for Families, Rutgers School of Social Work, are approved by the Board of Social Work Examiners and the New Jersey Department of Education, approval code #1965.
