Program Description
The demand for health care services among the elderly continues to escalate. The elderly patient often presents with multiple complex medical and psychosocial problems. Chronic disease and functional disability are prevalent in this population.
With many of the problems of the geriatric population being related to health and disability, the demand for competent, qualified health care practitioners who provide services to the elderly becomes critical. The diversity of elderly groups create the need for a broad array of health care services, requiring a holistic multidisciplinary approach to care.
As a result, health care professionals will require a greater amount of geriatric education either in their entry level or post-professional, continuing education. However, the growth in health care providers educated to administer care to the elderly has no kept up with this demand. The lack of appropriately trained health care personnel “seriously undermines the ability of the U.S. health care system to adequately assess, treat and rehabilitate this country’s growing aging population. This shortage leads to inappropriate care, higher costs, and poorer patient outcomes.” (National Agenda for Geriatric Education, Health Resources and Services Administration, p.103)
