The Division of AIDS Education was established in 1989 to improve community health and the quality of healthcare by working with service providers to conduct education, training, and technical assistance, addressing HIV/AIDS and other health-related conditions.
HIV Healthcare Provider Training
The AIDS Education Division provides on-site and regional workshops and conferences, and print and web-based activities for physicians, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and other members of HIV care teams including social workers and case managers. A specialized program offers practice-focused training for Newark-area HIV case managers; selected sessions are open to others on a fee basis.
Improving the Quality of HIV Services
The AIDS Education Division’s Quality Management program conducts chart review and provides technical assistance for HIV medical and medical case management programs receiving Ryan White funds. The goal of this program is to improve patient outcomes by educating clinicians and providing them with the tools to provide high-quality care for people living with HIV/AIDS. These activities are conducted in close collaboration with the NJ Ryan White Part B grantee, the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of HIV/AIDS Services (NJDHSS-DHAS), and the Newark Ryan White Part A grantee, the Newark Department of Child and Family Well-Being. The Division also participates in the New Jersey Ryan White Cross-Part Collaborative, which brings together representatives of all Ryan White-funded HIV medical programs in the state to monitor and improve the overall quality of HIV care. All Ryan White funded HIV programs are now mandated to utilize national performance measures established by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services – Health Resource and Services Administration (HRSA), to monitor the quality of care in HIV services.
